Oral Contraceptives Tied to Allergy Risk in Children

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Dec 29 - Previous maternal use of oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) appears to influence the risk of allergic rhinitis in subsequent offspring, Finnish researchers report in the December issue of Allergy.

Dr. Leea Keski-Nisula, of Kuopio University, Finland, and colleagues note that there has been a suggestion of an association between OCP use and allergic diseases.

To investigate whether thus might be particularly so for specific OCP formulations, the researchers studied 618 asthmatic children aged 5 or 6 years and 564 controls.

The team found that, compared to children whose mothers had not used OCPs, maternal use of desogestrel, gestodene or cyproterone acetate each combined with ethinylestradiol, within 1 year of pregnancy, increased the risk of allergic rhinitis among offspring (odds ratio, 1.67).

This was particularly the case in families with parental allergy (odds ratio. 1.78) and this association was stronger in boys (odds ratio, 2.12).

No association with asthma or atopic eczema was seen in offspring of mothers who had used OCPs.

The researchers note that women who had used more androgenic types of progestin formulas had higher serum levels of progesterone during early pregnancy.

The results are "tentative and possibly provocative" and they suggest that an allergy study of OCPs and of the type of progestin, may be of value, the investigators conclude.
