Hyaluronate Reverses Skin Atrophy in the Elderly

By David Douglas

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Dec 28 - Topical application of hyaluronate (HA) derived from rooster comb appears to be effective in treating skin atrophy in elderly patients, Swiss researchers report in the December issue of PLoS Medicine.

"We have identified a HA-derived skin anti-atrophy factor and its anti-atrophy mechanisms related to the CD44-HA pathway," lead investigator Dr. Gurkhan Kaya told Reuters Health.

Dr. Kaya of the University of Geneva and colleagues note that cellular responses to HA are primarily mediated by its principal cell surface receptor CD44. In vitro and in mice, the team established that this was the case. Defective CD44 functioning appears to underlie the pathogenesis of atrophy.

The researchers then studied 6 patients with a mean age of 76 years who had atrophic skin lesions and 17 healthy controls ranging in age from 19 to 65 years.

They were given daily treatment on the forearm with a 1% preparation of large hyaluronate fragments for one month. At the end of the treatment period, none of the control group demonstrated signs of skin thickening, inflammation or scaling.

However, all of the patients with skin atrophy showed improvement. This was characterized by marked skin thickening and the disappearance of pseudoscars, hemorrhage and visible superficial vessels.

"This factor corrects the extreme skin atrophy of elderly people," concluded Dr. Kaya.

However, he added, the combination of the HA factor "with other molecules which specifically interfere with the (CD44-HA) pathway may be of use for preventing skin atrophy in younger individuals."
