The detailed morphologic features of congenital and acquired valvular lesions such as cleft of mitral valve, prolapsed and flail leaflets, endocarditis-associated lesions are clearly demonstrated by 3D echo than conventional 2D images. The novel software for measuring the mitral annulus size, area, closure line, shape and function provide new insights in the disease management. Most importantly, 3D echo allows to understanding the mechanisms of ischemic mitral regurgitation.
From the 3D color flow volume data, the spatial distribution of intra-cardiac blood flow, stenotic or regurgitant jets could be displayed and analyzed. Measurement of vena contracta area provides a simple and accurate method for semi-quantification the severity of valvular regurgitation.
Using the full-volume dataset of 3D echo allows for accurately quantifying of atrial and ventricular volume, mass and function. The regional and global ventricular function could be further defined. The 3D echo-derived parameter has tremendous impact in the diagnosing and managing of heart failure patients.
