Prof. Yuqian Bao, a endocrinologist at Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and the director of Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Shanghai Jiao Tong University affiliated Sixth People’s Hospital, China. Being the PI or co-Investigator on several national and Shanghai local-funded grants, she has carried out the study on the pathogenesis of obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Specifically, based on the sophisticated measurement of visceral adipose tissue by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique, the team proposed both the optimal cut-point of visceral fat depots and the associated optimal waist cut-point for diagnosing visceral obesity. More recently, her team has investigated the discordance of hemoglobin A1c and oral glucose tolerance test in diagnosing diabetes. The outcomes revealed the optimal cut-point of hemoglobin A1c for diagnosing diabetes in Chinese, based on the cross-sectional epidemiological surveys in Shanghai communities. Relevant results have been published in BMJ in 2010. She is experienced in epidemiological studies, professionally trained in key research areas. Since 2000, as a key member of the research team, she has been actively involved in several community-based epidemiological studies on obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in Shanghai.
