DXY: How can German and Chinese benefit from this forum?
It is pretty clear that scientific development and management in lung cancer is fast, and we, Europeans, Pacific Germans and Chinese, face in one of the other the same problem. Our society is suffering very much from lung cancer, maybe China even more than the Europe, and this means it's a great challenge for our societies. And exchanging information on the scientific level and clinical level, also on the management of our patients is very important because it could help to improve the standards in China and Europe.
It's important to realize our differences in disease and disease biology. I think also to make that sure you know that the exchange of information, that is also important. In other fields in human life, it's important to exchange information from China to Europe back and forth for this particular reason just to include our capacities in the management of patients.
DXY: There are 6 sections in almost 30 presentations. Almost half of the speakers are German and half China. How are the speakers selected?
If you initially choose from Chinese and Germans, you have to be aware everything is balanced because we want to be friends, to work together, this must expressed by balancing, a meeting like that. So this is the reason why we both have European faculties and Chinese faculties, we have residents from Europe and residents from China, Dr Zhou, Shanghai, Professor He, Guangzhou, and me Germany.
We select the faculty, both from European and China. The selection of speakers has a lot to do with the present need for the new development in the field. We need to educate on one hand, but we also must exchange information, new information. So we need experienced people, and on this ground, we finally select the key people from each nation and from each institution to be a speaker.
DXY: Is there any difference between this Third Forum when compared with the first two? Are there any progress?
Yes, there is great progress. Staring an initiative is always challenging and difficult. Surprisingly, our first meeting in Shanghai was well organized and was a great success. I think it has something to do with the selection of the local logistic people and company such as Yang. Yang worked with pharmaceutical company, made his own business in organizing meetings. He did a great job in the first meeting in Shanghai and he also assisted us in doing the second meeting in Germany, I think everybody is work well. Such everybody was pleased to have such a well organized meeting. This meeting will not be possible if we don't have long-term supporters and pharmaceutical industry. There is no free lunch and there is nothing without money.
DXY: How did the forum got started?
People who are friends may be interested in sharing their friendship and their experience with each other. At the end of the day, they may sit together and say “why shouldn't we do a meeting”. 7 years ago, it was very easy to say “let's do something” and “let's try to find supporters”. It is initiative to people who feel very close inside personal issues. If there were no people, there would be no law force them to do.
DXY: How can the Chinese doctors and German doctors cooperate further with each other?
This is a great challenge. We do exchange information as you see, in German, Chinese and English language. The communication is not an easy way, but we try to overcome the problems by showing the slices in Chinese, in English.
At the end of the day there is a way to communicate, so this is what the meeting is all about. We have discussions, translators, but what maybe more important is how do they work together between the meetings. Is there any project going on, is there any exchange of people between the institutions and colleges? We do that and we have already send college students from Germany to Shanghai Pulmonary Hospital and to work with people we have also sent to Guangzhou, we will also have our institution come from Shanghai, Guangzhou and other cities in China. We already have active cooperation such as exchange people, integrating them in our world, in Germany and China. We finally decide to do common research projects, realizing the technically and also logistically. We try to publish this in a more cooperative way.
DXY: How long do you usually prepare for the meeting?
It's one year. We set up the date as we did this year before the next meeting. We will ask the faculty whether they want to join again after the excellent meeting both on the scientific level and on its happy atmosphere. There is no doubt they will join in the next meeting. There is no problem to set it up again because they are all excellent faculties.
DXY: Could you tell us the time of the next meeting?
It's proposed to be held during September 13-15 in Bresden in western Germany. Bresden is the city of the second meeting, and will also be the city for the fourth meeting. There were great Chinese participants in the second meeting. They not only came to the meeting in China year, but also they come over Germany. We had about 50 or 60 Chinese came last time.
DXY: How many people will go to the fourth meeting in Germany?
It certainly depends on the support. My experience in the meeting here is great, and what I am just hearing is that they all want to support the meeting. There maybe more than 100 Chinese going to Bresden. Altogether the Germans, the amount will be 300.
