1, your research background is quite good to be honest especially the abroad experience though you don't have any paper published, I think it should be OK to apply for a postdoc position if your luck is not too bad.
2, go straight for postdoc first, don't need any english tests, at most half a year later you will know results. Then decide what's the next step. My own opinion is if you unfortunately fail to get a postdoc position in the UK, don't bother to pursue PhD here for you'd better to have GRE and Ielts marks both for more successful application and it's getting harded and harder to apply half scholarship, let alone full scholarship so as you mentioned you are the main economic resouce for your family, it doesn't suit u to be a student in the UK.
3, don't ask even a word about part-time PhD when you contact your boss. Usually most professors and Senior lecturers in the UK are qulified to be a supervisor.
4, I really have no idea about cardiovascular area, not able to help u at this point. But you could check on Pubmed and find out papers associated with that field and then compare the departments and professors from UK, that should give you a rough idea.
hope that will be a little helpful to u.
答:don't worry about your english, you still have enough time to prepare. There are many interview questions online that should give u a rough idea. Usually they are interested in----
1, your background, what have you done before.
2, why do you want to go abroad.
3, why do you have interest in their lab, how did u know the lab. How much do you know about it.
4, do u have any plan for your project.
5, what's your personality? how can you cooperate with other colleagues smoothly.
Remember:
1, confidence is the most important key for interview, don't be panic in any circumstances.
2, the interview won't take long time, so once he starts, you just try you best to talk as long as you can, don't give him more chances to ask more questions. Speak clearly and slowly.
3, foreign devils know very well that most chinese from mainland are not able to speak very well English, so they don't expect to see how good your english is. They just want to know u a little bit through the interview before they offer u a position, they need to make sure if you can understand what they say, if you are capable of doing later project, if you can harmoniously work with other people, that's it.
good luck, i m sure you can do it.
问:applelhh :
i read all posts that you wrote before. It's so useful for me.
i am staying in USA as J2 dependent for 6 months and i am already 36~37years old. I have been a doctor in a city hospital in China for 15 years.
my husband doesnt want to come back to China again, so i must stay at here. He want me to apply for phd study here, but i think my age is too old to do that. If i do that, i will be 42 years old when i graduate from university. some classmates who come here earlier suggested me to work as a technician here first and prepare for usmle test. but my english level is so bad i think that could not conmunicate with natives effectively in 1 or 2 years. i had GRE score that will be overdue in 7 months.
If you are in my situation, what will you do? please give me some more instructive suggestion
答:hi caffeinism,
If I were u,
1, put all your efforts to improve your english, attend all the english courses you could sit, grasp every tiny chances to communicate with others. At the same time concentrate on preparing USMLE. No work, no other things, just those two.
2, or just like somebody suggested--work as a technician first and prepare for usmle test in the meantime. Don't worry your english, i think if you set your mind to learn it and open your mouth bravely, don't care if lose face, you are able to make huge improvement in half a year.
3, or apply for PhD, meanwhile prepare for USMLE, you could drop off 3 years later when you get your master degree.
4, or if you have some savings, get a technician or postdoc position first, in the meantime prepare for GMAT, then study MBA that just need 1 year, then work in some companies associated with medical research stuff.
hope that will be a little helpful to u.
Did u really read my post carefully? For I said clearly if you are going to apply for a postdoc position you don't need any english scores. Futher I said also very clearly you could go to Pubmed to search all the papers associated with your previous project then contact corresponding authors to see if they have positions available. Sorry to say that and I didn't mean to blame u but I do hope all of you could read it through completely and carefully before asking questions.
In terms of your 3rd and 4th questions, actually I answered very similar ones before but never mind say that again. Research background is very important but not that important, since you have a few papers published I think that's a quite good experience no matter what kind of research skills you know. The most important thing is to convince them you are capable of doing the job they offer to u.
speaking of if you could succeed to get a position I really have no idea as I don't know u at all, there are many other factors play quite important roles in applying for a position, like your english level, communicating skills, your referrence letters, your personality, etc. Different professors may be interested in different sides so you just do what you need to do with 100% efforts, then wait and see.
As you said, your aim is to be a clinician in China, right? before that you want to go abroad to improve your apptitute, enrich your horizons and by the way save some money, right? I have to tell you if you are determined to be a clinician in China, don't go aboad right after your graduation, otherwise I don't think you are able to pick up a clinical job plus you won't be admitted by hospital either. So after your graduation, there are two ways for you according to my knowledge ( there may be other better ways I don't know)
1. It's 5 years for PhD in the States. No exact time for Postdoc.
2. In theory, sounds like that, but in reality, not like that. In the States, both PhD and postdoc work in labs and have to work very hard, they usually just have 14 days holiday, while in the UK we have 39 days. There may be some seminars and social settings, some of which are especially for students, others for staffs.
3.that's right.
4. explained this question at the very beginning, read it carefully for you are really confused.
5. this question didn't make sense.
