胚胎干细胞（ES）来源于着床前胚胎的内细胞团，被公认为是最具多能性的干细胞群体。诱导多能干细胞（iPS）是在体细胞中表达特定基因产生的。胚胎干细胞能够在体外无限增殖，保持未分化的状态，同时保留了分化成各种体细胞和胚胎外组织的能力。目前已确立一份分子清单，它包含已知的ES特异或高表达基因及候选基因，可作为人胚胎干细胞的标志物，并有助于“干性”表型。
